A Little More Robust

I like this outfit, but I think it could have benefited from a bigger bow:

I mean, look at that wee little bow.  It has so much going for it; it’s a lovely plum shade, it has polka dots and it adds some interest to an otherwise rather staid outfit.  But, I don’t think it adds enough interest.  I think if it were just a little more full, a little more robust, a little more hide-your-women-and-children-THE-BOW-is-in-the-house, that it’d be better.  It’s not bad, it could just be better.

Other than the bow being a little on the twee side, I really do like this outfit.  I layered the the plum polka dot blouse (Old Navy) under a silver-gray tunic (Target).  I added black flared jeans (Banana Republic Heritage), black wedge booties (Nine West “Peekaboo” via Piperlime) and a couple of turquoise bracelets (vintage, Ray's Ragtime and gifted) to add a little more interest.

As I was typing this post, I had an idea that might help give my bow a little more oomph.  I'll recreate this outfit in a couple of weeks with that added piece and we'll see how it works!

Happy Monday, Everyone!

Bonus Footage: New Year’s Eve (Day)

What did I do for New Year’s Eve?  Absolutely nothing – I was in bed by 8:30.  But, once I tell you what I did for New Year’s Eve Day, you’ll totally understand.

We (the FB, the FC and I) got up at 5:30 on New Year’s Eve Day and we went over the rivers and through the woods to Central Oregon.  No, really, the highway we took, Highway 20, is called the Over the Rivers and Through the Woods Scenic Byway.  It starts in the Willamette Valley, where I live, and goes along the Santiam River, through moss-covered forests and the Cascade Mountains.

The snowy Cascade Mountains, I might add:

It rained heavily in the valley the week before New Years, which meant heavy snows in the mountains:

This is Mt. Washington:

This is a mountain lake I can’t recall the name of:

Our destination this cold, clear morning was Smith Rock.

This is Smith Rock:

It doesn’t look like much from the parking lot, does it?  As it turns out, it’s a whole lot.  We hiked up the steep (i.e. dangerous) east side of the rock.  I didn’t take very many pictures because I’m afraid of heights and was too scared to look up, much less take pictures.  But, I did get a couple.

This is from the beginning of our ascent:

You’ll notice there are some steps.  They didn’t do this to be nice.  They did this because it’s so steep you can’t get up there without steps or climbing equipment.  And, I’d like to point out that the steps were icy – not fun if you’re afraid of heights.

And this is farther up, but still not at the top:

But, once we got up there, the view was amazing.  I think it made it all worth it.

This is to the south (I think.  I'm not a Girl Scout and have no natural sense of direction.):

And here is a photo to the east:

The mountains in the middle are The Three Sisters.  The ones to the right and left (north and south?) I can’t remember.

After we got to the top, we ate lunch and then headed to the northwest side of the rock to begin our descent.  The hike down was far less harrowing than the hike up.  The incline was gentler and there were no icy steps to contend with.

This is Monkey Rock.  If you squint your eyes, it looks sort of like the head of a monkey.  We started our descent way up there:

It really didn’t take us much time to get down, but, after that it was a long hike (a couple of hours, at least) all the way around the rock and back to our car.  Happily, once we made it down, it was relatively flat and there was plenty of time for sightseeing that wasn’t accompanied by nausea and under-the-breath cursing.

One amazing thing about Smith Rock is the rock climbers:

In addition to the rock climbers, the rock formations are very cool.  I thought this one looked like the Sphinx:

I love the verdigris color of these cliffs:

And the window in these cliffs:

It was a clear, beautiful day and a fabulous trip.  But, by the time we made it back over the rivers and through the woods we were all exhausted (3 hours each way).  We ate, showered and, as I said, were in bed by 8:30.  I did wake up at midnight due to a neighbor’s impressively loud fireworks display, but only long enough to mumble something along the lines of “Mmmph… fire… works” before falling back to sleep.

I hope everyone else’s New Years was just as fabulous,

Two Loves = New Love

I love this sweater with these boots:

I mean, I love this sweater.  And I love these boots (yes, I know I’m pointing out the obvious here).  But, I’ve decided I really, really, really love this sweater with these boots.  They just go so well together.

The caramel color of the sweater (thrifted) plays perfectly with the variegated coloring of the boots (Born “Sosie” via Nordstrom).  So much so that I feel like spending the rest of the winter finding different outfits that incorporate these two items.  Today I paired them with black leggings (INC via Macys), a navy and white striped tunic (Old Navy) and a multi-colored scarf of disremembered origin.

So, yeah, more outfits with these boots and this sweater are forthcoming.  I recognize it may not be terribly exciting for my readers, but perhaps if we all pretend it’s an exercise in remixing?  Maybe?  If not, just look away on those days, folks.  Look away.

In other news, I took a pilates class last night for the first time in years and found out two things about myself.  One, I am amazingly inflexible.  Two, I don’t love New Age music.  In spite of these epiphanies, I enjoyed myself and am pleasantly sore today so I’ll definitely be going back next week.

Also?  It’s Friday, which is the best news I've had all week.

Happy Friday, All!

The Earl of Houndstooth

This is houndstooth:

So named because it was created by and for the Earl of Houndstooth for use in the livery worn by the servants in Houndstooth Manor.

Okay, so that’s not true.  Near as I can tell, houndstooth got it’s name from the fact that the tessellations fit together similarly to how a hound’s teeth fit together.

These are a hound's teeth:

And yes, I can see how houndstooth resembles a hound's teeth, but I still like my story better.  Mostly because I didn’t want to title my post “Looks Like a Dog’s Mouth,” for what I think are obvious reasons.  Even though the true origin of the pattern is rather inglorious, I am a fan of houndstooth.  Mostly in the form of skirts, such as the one I’m wearing today:

This particular skirt would probably actually be called puppytooth (it’s a real thing, trust me), because of the small scale of the pattern, and is handmade vintage (thrifted).  I paired it with an emerald silk blouse (Oscar de la Renta, thrifted (for $2!!)), tights (Spanx), wedge booties (Nine West “Peekaboo” via Piperlime) and a black glass necklace (Juicy Couture via Nordstrom).

Today’s Takeaway: If you’re not a fan of the large-scale houndstooth from this fall and winter, look for a smaller-scale puppytooth piece; it’s more subtle and easier to work with.

Happy Thursday, Everyone!  And because today is Thursday, make sure you check out or link up with Spunky Chateau's Thursday's are for Thrifters Link Party!

This Time Last Year

On January 2nd of last year, I posted my very first outfit post on Fashion for Giants.  I wore this:

And now, a year later, I’m on my 296th post and I’m wearing this:

Today’s “this” is a blue sweater (Old Navy) tucked into a blue, embroidered skirt (refashioned by me from a vintage Guatemalan dress), goldenrod tights, a studded belt (Michael Michael Kors via Nordstrom), riding boots (Born Crown “Sosie” via Nordstrom) and some bracelets and a watch.

Aside from the fact that my hair has gotten longer and more unruly, not much has changed here at Fashion for Giants in the last year.  My style has evolved somewhat, but everything that I wear is still very much me.  My outfits still consist of some hits, some misses and a lot of boots.  But, most importantly, my blog has stayed true to my vision; nothing slick or fancy, like my style, it’s still very much me.  It was, and it remains, a blog about a very tall girl with rebellious thighs sharing her style and her odd sense of humor.

Well, one thing has changed – I’m sharing my odd sense of humor with more Reader Friends than ever now.  And, for that, I’m truly thankful.  While I’d probably still be writing about my thighs’ attempt to create the People’s Republic of Thighastan if I didn’t have any readers, I’m so very happy you’re all here.  So, thank you all very much for playing along.

Happy Wednesday, Everyone!  And Happy New Year!

Happy 2012 all! Im wishing you all the best! Hope you had great night with lots of fun and laughter!
My friends know how bad i am in these congratulations, but they also know how sincere i am when i say those simple wishes from my heart!
I will do my best to make this place even better in this year cause this type of blogging is  relaxing and calming for me, i really enjoy it!
Do you remember when i told you about my early b-day gifts from my mom? I already showed you one ( the gray bag with chains and zippers) and finally after three months im showing you  the second  - crossbody studded bag.
Lately my dressing is pretty simple: big and warm cardigans, basic tees, fake leather pants with different boots, bags and other details. Boring for someone, but  perfect for me and this type of winter without snow and low temperatures.
What are your plans for January? Are u ready for chasing long wanted pieces on sale? ;)
