Sure It’s Boxy, But It’s Plaid

And that is, apparently, reason enough for me, because, yeah, this dress is boxy.  But, it is also plaid:

And here at Fashion for Giants, we'll take plaid in any shape.

Yes, I could have worn a belt, but I didn’t.  I actually like the cut of this dress.  And the colors of the plaid are fun.  So, I may look like a box, but I look like a fun box.  So, no, no belt.   Just a vintage plaid dress (handmade via Goodwill) layered over a blue-striped blouse (Gap), blue tights (DKNY via Nordstrom) and riding boots (Born Crown via Nordstrom).

Oh, and I also wore my new carnelian Friendship Bracelet that the lovely people at RedEnvelope sent to me:

It also comes in iolite and aqua chalcedony, but, let’s be honest, I was never going to choose any color but orange.  And not just because it goes so well with plaid; as we all know, orange goes with everything so that’s a non-issue.  No, I just think the luminescent quality of carnelian orange is so pretty. Really though, I would have been happy with any of the colors or several other pieces from RedEnvelope; they have some lovely, lovely items.

Speaking of lovely, I thrifted a new coat on Saturday:

Which is also a bit boxy, isn't it?  Maybe boxy is my new thing?  I don't know, but I guess it's possible.  Again though, boxy or not, I love this coat; I love the color and the weight is perfect for spring.  Also, the bracelet sleeves show off my Red Envelope bracelet perfectly, so everybody wins.

Happy Monday, Everyone!

Textural Interest

One of the more difficult things for me is working different textures into an outfit.  As with most things, the textures that appeal most to me are not subtle.  I don’t just want texture, I want TEXTURE.  I want big, chunky sweaters and fur and the odd feather or seven.

Unfortunately, when you get into the bolder textures, they can add bulk to an outfit.  This can be problematic for everyone, but we larger women, especially, are told to stick to sleek knits for their slimming effect.  God forbid we look bigger than we are, or even our actual size; the oft preached goal is to appear smaller.

Well, as I often do, I’ve thrown that rule aside.  This time in favor of some texture:

But, I’m not a complete fashion heathen, so I’ve tried to compromise.  My delightfully fuzzy vest (Design History) has a fairly slim cut and so adds texture without adding too much bulk.  The sheer blouse (Liberty Loves via Nordstrom Rack) under the vest and the slim cut of the skirt (vintage via Goodwill) also add texture without bulk.  I added a bit of leather with the boots (Born Crown “Sosie” via Nordstrom) and metal with the cuff (thrifted via Goodwill), all of which combine to create textural interest.

At least that’s what I’m going with.

Happy Thursday, Everyone!  And Happy Valentine’s Day!

Best EBEW Ever

Today’s Everybody Everywear theme is… boots:

Yep, boots.  Which makes this the best EBEW ever.  I mean, I like that EBEW challenges me most of the time, but sometimes it’s nice not to have to think too hard about my outfits.  Really, the only way this could have been easier for me is if the theme had been “Clothes;” I’m fairly certain I could nail that one too.

Yes, I said “too” because I’m pretty confident with today’s look.  Because, if there is anything I can style without too much trouble, it's boots:

Of course I chose my Born Crown “Sosie” boots (via Nordstrom) for the challenge because if I were only allowed one pair of boots (Heaven forbid!) in my wardrobe, it would be these.  I’ve had them for four or five years now, and they’ve held up beautifully.  In addition to my beloved boots, I also wore a vintage dress (Lorac Originals, thrifted), tights (Hue via Macys), a tri-color belt (Goodwill) and a hilariously awesome vintage cardigan (Lord Jeff via Goodwill).

Yep, the maker of this cardigan is Lord Jeff:

And, to me, that is hilarious.  I mean, is there a less noble name than “Jeff”?  I love that almost as much as I love the rest of this cardigan.  And I love this cardigan a LOT.

But, I digress.  We’re talking about boots, not cardigans.  To see how everybody everywhere else wore their boots, be sure to stop by EBEW.

And have a Happy Tuesday, All!

Ambitious

I think today’s outfit was a little ambitious:

It hurts to smile...

...but I fought through the pain to provide you all with this goofy look.

I don’t mean sartorially ambitious (obviously), I mean it’s too ambitious for my current physical capabilities.

It took me at least 10 minutes to struggle into these tights (DKNY via Nordstrom) today.  And my sister not only had to hook my bra for me, she had to tuck my shirt (Halogen via Nordstrom) into my houndstooth pencil skirt (thrifted) for me.  I was able to put on my sweater vest (vintage, thrifted) and studded belt (Michael Michael Kors via Nordstrom) all by myself but needed her help to pad the bruise on my ankle before I could put on my boots (Born Crown “Sosie” via Nordstrom).

I think I’m going to have to go a bit simpler for the rest of the week, if only for my sister’s sake.

Happy Monday, All!
