Fresh for Fall: Sweatshirt Chic

Much to the enjoyment of sporty gals everywhere, sweatshirts are having a moment.  Sweatshirt chic is a big trend for fall.  It's been a fringe trend for years due to chic, yet expensive offerings from the likes of Phillip Lim and Kenzo.  Now, however, the trend has finally trickled down to the masses and this fall there are affordable options at nearly every price point.

Keep in mind though that these are not your average, everyday track and field hoodies.  No, this fall's sweatshirts are more sophisticated than that; they're embellished, printed and not always made of sweatshirt material.

Here are some of my favorites:

Shiny and leopard and gray; I'm not sure it gets any better than this.

Unlike your boyfriend's old wrestling sweatshirt, these sweatshirts weren't made for weekend lounging.  Instead, don't be afraid to take these out of the house; they look great paired with pencil skirts, full midi skirts and leather.  Or, for a more casual look, pair them with distressed jeans and flats, like I did here.

Brights for Fall

For some reason super-saturated bright colors feel like fall to me.  Most people tend to start pulling out their browns, tans and rusts but I start pulling out brightly colored pieces like this dress:

 Hmm.  It looks a bit muted in those pictures, but it really is quite bright:

 
See?  Lovely and bright.

I found it last weekend on a quick jaunt through Goodwill and couldn't wait to wear it.  Happily it's warm enough to do so without having to layer so I paired it with my Born riding boots and added a belt (thrifted) and hot pink studs (Kate Spade New York).

Also, for those of you who felt like you were being watched as you read this, I think it might be my boobs:

I didn't realize it until we took the photos, but that particular design element makes it appear as though my boobs have eyes.  And that they are watching you.

Fresh for Fall – Tasseled Scarves

Adding a scarf to your fall wardrobe is probably not the most ground-breaking suggestion I’ve ever made.  But wait.  I’m not done.  What I’m actually suggesting is adding a tasseled scarf to your fall wardrobe.

What’s that?  Mind blown?  Yeah, I figured as much.  

Seriously though, while scarves for fall may not seem fresh or new, tasseled scarves do feel new.  Everyone owns printed scarves and fringed scarves and printed scarves with fringe.  Adding a tasseled scarf to your wardrobe adds interest and an injection of “now” for the new season.

Below are some tasseled scarves that I think would be fabulous additions to any fall look.

This scarf has everything, in the best possible way; stripes, subtle sequins and multicolored tassels in a palette that will work all year round.

Not interested in putting a riot of colors near your face?  Then, for you, I recommend this Anthropologie scarf.  The palette is subtle and sophisticated but not boring.

Mad for Plaid

If you follow me on Pinterest, you know that I've been pinning the heck out of plaid looks for this fall.  I have, so far, resisted the urge to run out and buy/thrift a bunch of plaid but I'm no longer able resist wearing the plaid items I already own.  Like this plaid skirt:

I thrifted this skirt a couple of years ago but, apparently I wasn't that in to plaid a couple of years ago because I rarely wore it.  I'm planning on making amends for that this fall because I am currently absolutely mad for plaid.

Today I wore the skirt (similar) with a chambray shirt (Caslon, similar), my much-loved Born Crown riding boots (similar) and a vintage ram belt.

I finished the look off with a ball-tasseled (basseled?) scarf (LOFT, similar):

Fall Fashion Finds

In spite of my best efforts to hold onto summer, I have to admit that I'm getting excited for fall fashion.  I don't need many (any) new clothes for this season, but there are a few things that have caught my eye.

Like this skirt:

I know, I know, my thighs may fight that slit with all the bootlegged weaponry in their arsenal, but I love it.  I love the scale of the plaid, I love that it's knit and I love that it sort of reminds of the 90s.  Plaid is big for fall and if I get anything plaid, I think it just might be this skirt and thighs be damned.


I also LOVE this eShakti dress for fall:

Another trend for fall is gray jeans.  I personally like this pair from Old Navy:

They say they're mid-rise, but I have them in another wash and they feel more like high-rise, which is fabulous for me.  They're so comfortable I might just have to get them in gray too.


Pointed Toe + Animal = Love:

I know they're not for everyone, but I love pointy-toed flats and these are wonderful to me.  I love the color (they also come in green) and love the subtlety of the print.  I don't need another pair of pointy-toed animal print flats, but if I did, I'd get these.


Boots.  I know booties are having a moment and they're well-loved in my closet as well, but I will always love tall boots.  Especially tall boots that are tall enough for my giant self, like these:

B.P. Darbie boot - Nordstrom

These are intended as knee-high boots for the less tall, but they're the perfect height for me.  They're also the perfect calf-width for my somewhat muscular calves.


Wear your heart on your sleeve and your other sleeve and well, your entire torso with this adorable blouse:

Heart Icon Button Down - Gap

It took me some time to get on the button-down bandwagon, mostly because fit was an issue.  I've since found a couple brands that fit well, including the Gap shrunken boyfriend fit button-downs.  And this one is adorable.  I will be wearing alone and under my sweaters come winter.


Teal.  Not cobalt.  Teal.  Like these teal ankle pants:

I know cobalt remains big for this fall, but if you want an alternative to cobalt, I'd like to recommend teal.  It's a sleeper color for this fall, but it's one I hope to see more of.


A cozy cowl.  I love cowls and I am obsessed with this one:

It's the skipjack cowl from Victory Garden Yarn and I'm convinced that its wonderful texture will make every fall outfit better.  And it comes in 25 gorgeous colors so there's something for everyone.

Why Not Try: Oxblood?

This fall, why not try oxblood?  Sure, it’s the most unappealing sounding trend since underwear as outerwear, but it’s actually quite nice.  So, what is oxblood?  Oxblood is a deep, reddish brown hue similar to burgundy:

And it is a huge color trend for fall. Personally, I love oxblood for fall because unlike some trends (again, underwear as outerwear comes to mind), I think this one is extremely wearable.  It’s also versatile, easy to find, and easy to thrift.  

Take, for example, these oxblood (yes, I’ve referred to them in the past as burgundy, but I guess this year we’re calling them oxblood; just go with it) “nun shoes” (Naya “Jada” via Nordstrom):

I bought them last fall and I wear them all the time.  I wear them most often with gray and black because they add just the right bit of color.  But, you don’t have to go dark; oxblood also looks fabulous with blush, cream and teal.  Most recently, I paired it with bright yellow and navy blue:

In addition to being versatile, oxblood really is easy to find, both in retail stores and thrift stores.  Aside from my Naya shoes, all of the rest of the oxblood in my closet has been thrifted.  But, if thrifting isn’t your thing, here are some pieces that I like for fall.

Unfortunately this tank is only available up to size 12 and runs a full size small, but it’s an otherwise great way to combine two trends in one.

That Old Fall Feeling

It’s, finally, starting to feel like fall here in Oregon.  The mornings are getting chillier and I’m almost to the point of wearing a light sweater for the ride in.  Honestly, though, that could just be because I want to wear sweaters; they are all I’ve been thrifting lately.  Sadly, it’s still not sweater weather, but it is totally “subdued, fall-like color weather” so I dressed accordingly:

Yes, I do wear this dress all year long (because those are the best dresses) but I like it the most for fall.  The flowers have a delightful mossy, pile of leaves look to them and, for me, nothing says fall like moss and piles of leaves.  And mushrooms.  But, I digress.  Today I paired the dress (vintage) with a light gold belt (thrifted?) and shoes (Kenneth Cole Reaction, v. old).  I also added my new cameo and garnet earrings (via Deepwood Vintage Fair) and a vintage cameo bracelet.

The stones are rough-cut, low-grade garnet.

As much as I like this dress with the flats, I’d much rather be wearing it with boots.  I miss my boots, y’all.  They’re all on deck, freshly waterproofed and just waiting in the wings.  I swear, as soon as the temperature drops below 80, I’m breaking them out.  And probably the sweaters too.  Basically, you should expect me to look overheated and uncomfortable in my photos for the next couple of weeks.

Why Not Try: Black with Brown

This fall and winter, why not try black with brown?  I know that when I was growing up the edict was either/or, but never both together.  Thankfully, fashion has become more relaxed and we can wear white after Labor Day, socks with sandals, and, yes, black with brown.  In fact, pairing black with brown can be extremely chic when done right.

So, what constitutes to doing it right?  Luckily, for this combination, it’s hard to go wrong.  I personally like to pair my black with warmer browns, such as camel, caramel or cognac.  But, it can be equally chic with darker browns such as chocolate and espresso.  Really, the only thing to keep in mind is to make the pairing look deliberate.

For example, I wouldn’t pair an all-black outfit with espresso-brown shoes because it could look like you got dressed in the dark and accidentally chose your brown shoes instead of your black shoes.  However, the same black outfit with lighter brown shoes, such as cognac, indicates you deliberatelychose contrasting shoes to enhance the look.   And adding both a brown belt andbrown shoes can make the look even more deliberate. 

Probably the easiest way to try this trend is to find items that combine the two for you.  For example, my black flats have a brown ankle strap, making pairing them with my black dress easy as pie:

Another easy way to wear black and brown is to introduce a third color, like with my black, brown and cream dress:
